The program 

 

Disaster Recovery Mentors is a mentoring program coordinated by Australian Red Cross, aimed at supporting disaster-affected communities, their leaders and the practitioners who support them in their recovery. The aim of the Disaster Recovery Mentors program is to support community-led recovery. The goals of the network are to:

  • help community leaders avoid unnecessary pitfalls in recovery
  • normalise the recovery experience for people
  • provide an opportunity for people with experience in recovery to use their experience constructively.

 

The opportunity 

 

For this role you will need to have personal experience of community recovery after a disaster and willingness to share that experience. You will have excellent listening, communication and relationship development skills and the ability to relate to and empathise with a broad range of people. You will also have a high level of knowledge and understanding of the disaster recovery process and importantly, a capacity to practice a high level of self-care.

 

Red Cross will ensure you have training, ongoing support and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.  

 

The impact 

 

As a volunteer, you will help disaster impacted communities navigate through the disaster recovery process. You will have the opportunity to learn from many people’s diverse history and knowledge, as well as feeling the satisfaction of giving back to others.  

 

Application requirements

  • For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised through Red Cross. 
  • You will need to be able to commit to the role for 12 months
