The program

The Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) offers vital support to refugees and humanitarian entrants settling in Australia, including one-on-one casework, basic household goods, orientation, and housing support. It also includes practical support like helping our clients link with Centrelink, Employment, Medicare, schools, and other local services.

The opportunity

Community Orientation volunteers will assist clients with practical settlement needs such as learning how to use public transport, attending health appointments, shopping together, and connecting the family with services in the community. In connection with the Humanitarian Settlement Program orientation outcomes, you will also help them build new skills and confidence in speaking English so that they will be able to participate in and enjoy Australian life.

HSP volunteers are friendly, accepting, and flexible individuals, who are motivated to support the learning and positive settlement of newly arrived refugees. All the areas within the program are supported by the Red Cross caseworkers and Volunteer Engagement Officer. Training and ongoing development opportunities are offered as part of the program.

The impact

Red Cross volunteers are a vital connection between refugees and their new communities.
