Join Us as Kaiwhakatere Te Amorangi: Lead the Way in Transforming Māori Partnerships and Relationships
This key leadership position will drive the council’s Māori Relationship function, providing specialized strategic guidance to strengthen partnerships with iwi and hapū. Leading Te Amorangi Unit, the successful candidate will ensure Council relationships responsibilities are embedded within council processes, fostering genuine collaboration that benefits communities and council alike.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a high-performing team, ensuring Mana Whenua voices shape policy and decision-making.
- Strengthen council’s relationships with iwi and hapū, building trust and long-term partnerships.
- Drive systemic change, embedding Te Tiriti and Councils legislative obligations and Māori perspectives into council functions.
- Champion equitable resource allocation, ensuring sustainable investment in Māori-led initiatives and outcomes
- Enhance cultural competency and capability, equipping council staff with the confidence and understanding needed for relationship excellence.
What We’re Looking For
Rotorua Lakes Council is looking for a passionate and experienced leader to drive change and strengthen relationship with iwi and hapū. Outstanding communication and influence will be key in navigating differing worldviews, facilitating challenging discussions. An in-depth understanding of legislative frameworks—including Te tiriti o Waitangi, the RMA and our Local Government obligations, the successful candidate will offer technical advice on Legislation, relationship protocols, and partnership arrangements.
You’ll have management experience building a high-performing team, ensure effective scheduling, planning and shape policies, and ensure Mana whenua voices influence decision-making. You will lead organisational change initiatives and build Council cultural confidence and competence. Your expertise in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga, local government frameworks and processes and strategic engagement will be key in creating equitable opportunities.
