We have two fixed-term parental leave cover roles available:
Role 1: Immediate start, ending 10 March 2026
Role 2: Starts September 2025, ending September 2026
About the Role
As a Licensing Officer (Kaihoe Whakaaetanga), you will deliver responsive, solutions-focused licensing inspection services and professional advice across the Community Safety and Regulatory Services team. This role involves technical licensing compliance, risk management, and service quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide timely, technical licensing compliance advice for consent processing, LIMs, and PIMs.
- Manage risk exposure and legislative requirements related to licensing compliance.
- Conduct inspections of licensed premises and report on applications for Licences and Managers Certificates.
- Appear before the Alcohol and Regulatory Licensing Authority and District Licensing Committee as required.
- Investigate complaints about licensed premises and abandoned vehicles, and manage their removal when necessary.
- Hold and exercise powers as a Litter Control Officer, Parking Enforcement Officer, Geothermal Safety Officer, Alcohol Licensing Inspector, and as an Officer under relevant health and food legislation.
- Engage proactively with internal and external stakeholders, including council staff, elected members, iwi, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Contribute to cross-organisational collaboration and continuous service improvement.
What We’re Looking For
- 2–3 years’ experience in an enforcement or regulatory role.
- Understanding of hearing protocols and experience giving evidence to judicial bodies (desirable).
- Ability to balance customer satisfaction, economic development, public expectations, and safety/environmental standards.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including technical reporting.
- Skilled at interpreting specialist advice and exercising sound judgment in compliance matters.
- Adaptable, proactive, and accountable with strong problem-solving skills.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Demonstrated honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect in all interactions.
- Strong customer and solutions focus, with a commitment to delivering positive community outcomes.
- Computer literacy and ability to manage multiple priorities.
